Michael Halsband - photographer

I was just out of art school and Klaus was my first major project that I committed myself to. And Klaus and I were looking at these photographs thinking, maybe we could y’know make little postcard-sized prints and he could sign them, and we’ll sell them at Fiorucci, y’know, for like 5 dollars each. And everybody thought we were nuts, I mean who’s gonna pay for a postcard 5 dollars?! But there, it worked. We started making a couple hundred bucks a week, which was great. Klaus and I would get together in my darkroom at night, and we would print em up as an assembly line. And usually he would bring over something he’d baked, or he would make something at the studio, so we would have this whole session of like printing and baking pies.
