Tony Frere - performer in The Nomi Show

My first night in New York City, Joey introduced me to Klaus. We went to CBGBs. We went walking around on the Bowery, and the Lower East Side. And immediately realized that we had an affinity for a certain kind of vocalizing. He more opera, and me more jazz, but using upper ranges of our voices. So, even that first night, we were like singing on the streets of New York, that sort of thing. Trading riffs. Everyone was young and crazy and crashing at each other’s places and exchanging ideas, and exchanging art. And you NEVER knew when you went to Klaus’ house on a Sunday afternoon, who would be there. So it became like a family... like a family that had been placed here from outer space, in the East Village.
